Sweet, nutritive and mucilaginous. Demulcent, adaptogen, antibacterial, antiviral, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, nutritive, antioxidant and mild laxative.

This is a different plant and flavor than what we have associated with black licorice candy. Instead, it has a very pure, sweet taste, sweeter than sugar. It has been used as an easy way to make some formulas more palatable. Traditional Chinese Medicine calls it the “harmonizer” of formulas. Licorice has been used for colds, flus, and soothing sore throats. It is said to also be a restorative for the adrenals and glandular system. Traditionally has been used in liver formulas for its purported protective actions; blood purifying blends; digestive blends because it seems to help with indigestion, gastritis, and ulcers, and blends that help some with stabilizing blood sugar.

Choose from powdered, or cut and sifted forms.

Avoid use if you have high blood pressure, or low potassium levels.

Avoid using this herb in large doses without other herbs, and for long periods of time.
