Goldenseal Root
Spp. Hydrastis canadensis
Fam. Ranunculaceae
Bitter and cold. Alterative, anti-inflammatory, bitter tonic, hemostatic and astringent.
Goldenseal is thought to be one of the stronger antibacterial and anti-inflammatory herbs in North America. Goldenseal seems to be particularly good for healing the mucous membranes of the digestive tract, making it good for gastroenteritis. It is said that it can help to dry out excess mucous, which can make it useful for some lung complaints during colds and flus. In some cases, goldenseal may help slow excessive bleeding. It has been used to treat hemorrhoids, vaginal yeast infection, and as an eyewash.
Avoid long term use because its antibiotic properties will deplete the good flora in your gut.
Avoid use during pregnancy.
